He married Eliza Ann Wilson, daughter of Samuel P. and Elizabeth "Betty" (Douglass) Wilson, on 1 January 1867 in Hamilton County, Illinois. Eight children were born to them: Ewing, Rhoda, Florence, Samuel, Anna, Loomis, Harry and Rosa.
Throughout his life, Zachariah made his living as a farmer.
He died on 10 March 1908, survived by his wife and three children (Rhoda, Florence and Harry).
