William Arthur Irwin was born Dec. 5, 1867 at Logansport, Ind. At the age of 15 he and his brother went to Port Byron, Ill, on the Mississippi river, where they did farm work. A few years later they moved to Kansas, settling in the vicinity of Havensville. Later he sent for his mother and established a home here. "Billy" as everyone knew him always engaged in work which was a service to the public, such as livery stable, coachman, hardware clerk and repair, grocery clerk and undertaker. He served two terms at he State House as Document clerk. In public life he served as Constable and was a member of the grade school board. He was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen and twice was elected a delegate to the National Encampment of MWA at Rock Island, Ill. He was a member of the Christian Church serving as S. S. Supt. and teacher for a number of years. This public activity ended as his eyesight began to fail, confining him to his home for the past 3 years. He never complained and enjoyed his family and home.
He was united in marriage to Allie Otie Dennis Nov. 28, 1894 at Holton. To this union five children were born: Lester of Onaga, Dewey of Tulsa, Ok.; Raymond of Topeka, Evan and Lavonia of Havensville. There are 4 grandchildren, one great-grand-child and several nieces and nephews.
He passed away at his home Mar. 1st at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 24 days, after a two weeks illness with the flu.
Besides his wife and five children he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ida Irwin of Tulsa, and a large circle of other relatives and friends who will long cherish his memory.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dale Rider, Singers were Mrs. Dale Rider and Mrs. Noel McKee, accompanied by Miss Julia Vina Ellis. Pallbears were W. T. Flowers, W. H. McKee, C. A. Flowers, Fred Jontra, Elmer Patrick and Ross Ellis Sr.
