Ensign S. M. Amesbury, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #9935 on 01 Dec. 1941. Had entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

Lieut. (Junior Grade) Amesbury was killed in action when his aircraft was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire during the invasion of North Africa. Amesbury was buried at Port Lyautey but, after the war, his remains were returned to the United States and reinterred in the family's plot.

The USS AMESBURY (DD-66) was named in his honor.

Stanton Amesbury left a widow, the former Miss Janice Elizabeth Kenney. They had one daughter, Jane Stanton Amesbury.
