Fred served in World War I, and his registration card was signed June 12, 1917, and described him as a single, oil field worker for Texas Exploration Company in Damon, Texas. He was also described as tall (his son recalled that he was 6'-2"), grey eyes, and blonde hair. He was spared going overseas by a flu epidemic.
Just a few months later, on September 30, 1917, Fred married Jessie Louise McKinley in Ft. Bend County, Texas. She was 17 and he was almost 26 years old when they married. They had three children - 1) Jesse Philip (Phil) Ward, 2) Byron McKinley (Mack) Ward, and 3) Helen Louise (Helen) Ward Dusek.
Fred worked the oil fields around Damon, and also spent time in Arizona. He and Louise spent quite a few years in Venezuela where he was drilling water wells for the government there.
Fred and his brother, Jesse, also built & owned the Fairview Courts, Cafe and Service Station in Rosenberg for a number of years. His children as well as many nieces and nephews were employed there during their early years and have fond memories of the time they spent working there.
After spending much of his life traveling, Fred was back in Ft. Bend County when he died on November 22, 1966 at the Polly Ryon Hospital in Richmond, Texas. He was buried November 25, 1966 in the Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg, Texas.
