Hannah "Anna" Walkington was born to Richard and Jane Leng Walkington in Yorkshire, England. She married Henry Atkinson in Sinnington, Yorkshire on June 03, 1823 - Per Church Records. They became the parents of three daughters - Lavinia, Mary Ann and Hannah.

In 1835, two years before Michigan became a state, Henry, Hannah and their three daughters sailed from Whitby, England for America. They would disembark in Canada, travel to Detroit where they procured a horse and wagon. Their destination was White Pigeon, MI - but after losing a wheel on the wagon and other subsequent hardships and fearing for the safety of their three little daughters, they decided to settle North of the pleasant village of Marshall, MI. They purchased land and built a home and farmed for 46 years till the death of Henry on July 25, 1881 - Hannah passed away two months later on August 5, 1881.

Daughter Lavinia married Edward Ward, also from England. Mary Ann married Charles Knight and Hannah Atkinson would remain a "maiden lady" (as her sweetheart died in the Civil War) living to the age of 82 1/2. Hannah Atkinson was cared for by nephew - Thomas Edward and his wife - Virginia Mae Barrette Ward - then Emily Mabel Ward and husband - Oscar Warren Lower. The family is interred at Oakridge Cemetery. Submitted by G Nephew Peter (Lower/Ward Family) Rodgers.
