Son of James Henry Bird and Donalda Quesnel Bird. He Was born in Hawthorne , California. He first married Patricia Anne George on 10 June 1951 in Hawthorne. They had 4 sons. Patrick, Jammie, Scott and Robie. They divorced 7 Feb. 1967. He second married Leah Ann Hufford Chase on 10 Feb. 1967. They had one son, Joel Walter Bird born 27 April 1968. Walter adopted his second wife's two sons from a previous marriage , Shawn and Todd Chase Bird on March 1971. He was active most of his life in Boy Scouts up until the age of 60. He was awarded the Silver Beaver and many other awards for his work.
