Easley left Benton county, Arkansas for the California gold fields about 1849 with two brothers - Burnett & Francis. Burnett died on the way to California probably in the Great Basin from effects of drinking alkaline water. William Easley's Bible states that William D. Easley was bushwhacked near Mud Springs (later known as El Dorado) while taking gold in to be assayed. Only Francis Marion Easley returned home to Arkansas to tell what happened to his brothers. The 1850 Federal census of El Dorado county recorded William and Francis Easley -along with 904 other men- as there mining for gold, with the "average product of each miner's labour per day" for William at $4.50 and Francis at $2.50.
