Buried at the Masonic Cemetery on Carter & South Henry Street in Farmington. David Murphy Sr. was the husband to Rachel (nee Bacon) Murphy and son of Rev. William Murphy Sr. & Sarah Barton Murphy. He was the half brother to Rev. William "Big Billy" Murphy Jr., buried at William Murphy Cemetery. David and Big Billy Murphy are credited as the founders of the Murphy Settlement which later became Farmington, Missouri. David donated 52 acres of land on September 22, 1822 for the county seat of St. Francois County which became downtown Farmington.

There is a problem with the documentation of David Murphy and wife, Rachel's 10 children with the birth/death years when compairing to a single wife named Rachel. Rachel by one researcher was declared to have lived from 1773 to 1827. What is engraved on her tombstone in the Masonic Cemetery for when this Rachel died was March 10, 1853 at age 64 years which would make her birth year of 1789. So the birth years of these children does not match up. Stating this, the documented children of David Sr. & Rachel Murphy are:
1) Isaac Murphy born circa 1792 {married Frances Haylor}
2) William Murphy born 26-May-1794 in Greene County, TN {who married Rhoda George in 1818}
3) Richard Murphy born circa 1796 {married 1/2 cousin Sarah Barton "Sallie" Murphy}
4) Tobitha [Tabitha] Murphy born in 1799 {married 1/2 cousin Rev. John C. Murphy in 1815}
5) Lucy Ann Murphy born circa 1800 {married John Campbell}
6) Rachel Murphy born 1805 {who married James N. Younger}
7) Louisiana Murphy born between 1806 & 1808 {married Watson Cole}
8) Sally Murphy born circa 1810
9) David Murphy Jr. supposedly born in 1820 {married Sarah Ann Alexander on 10-Oct-1850 by one account but could have married a "Miss Whitenburg" by another account [probably mixed with another David Murphy]}. The age of this David is too big of an age gap between first born and David's though.
10) Now David Murphy Sr.'s supposedly had a second wife, possibly an Elviny Whitenburg who he married in 1827, but Rachel did not pass away until 1853 according to her headstone. So the 10th child born in 1828 had to been David Sr. & Rachel's son: Andrew Jackson Murphy {married Catherine Long, d/o Philip G. & Isabella (nee Murphy) Long}
