Doris J. (George) Newman was born on Friday; February 20, 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the daughter of: Earl and Nettie (Miller) George. Doris was a graduate of Springville High School and received her Teacher's Certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls; Black Hawk County, Iowa. Doris also attended Cornell College and taught school at Martelle; Jones County, Ida Grove; Ida County, Iowa, Vinton; Benton County, Iowa and Springville; Linn County, Iowa. On Friday; February 22, 1946, Doris married Dale R. Newman in the Methodist Church in Springville, Iowa. She was a member of Martelle United Methodist Church, a fifty-year member of Order of Eastern Star and belonged to Chapter DT PEO. Doris worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was a substitute teacher. Teaching was Doris' passion. Doris always put others interests above her own and she will be missed by all. Doris J. (George) Newman, age: 89, passed away on Thursday; September 10, 2009 at the Saint Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids; Linn County, Iowa from complications due to a fall in her home. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her husband of sixty-three years: Dale, her two children: Scott of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Christine (Dan) Emrie of Springfield; Greene County, Missouri. Her three grandchildren: Angela (Ryan) McKenna, Curtis Adams and Michael Newman. Her step-grandson: David Emrie. Her half-sister: Jean (Dick) Moore and her three half-brothers: Glenn, Don, and Larry Katcher. Doris was preceded in death by her parents: Earl and Nettie (Miller) George. May they rest in peace. May God bless her memory and give strength to those that mourn. Visitation will be from: 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday; September 13, 2009 at the funeral home, also from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Funeral services will begin at: 11:00 a.m. on Monday; September 14, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Martelle, Iowa. Interment will be at the Springville Cemetery in Springville, Iowa.
