Elizabeth was the second child of Frederick and Elizabeth Gibbs Shaffer. She lived with her family at 214 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC- a home which her father built. Today it is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. She married Dr. Robert H Shaffer whereupon they relocated to Madison, Florida for a physician's practice. She and Robert had eight children. Dr. Shaffer aided in the care of Confederate soldiers after the Battle of Olustee at the Smith Mansion in Madison, Florida. In family wills it states that Elizabeth returned to her family in Charleston after the death of Robert-about 1869. She brought with her the two youngest daughters, Mary and Martha. They lived with grandmother Elizabeth in the other family home in Marion, SC on Wilcox Avenue. Elizabeth died of influenza within two years of returning to South Carolina. At her death she had seen her father and three siblings pass. Her daughters remained with grandmother Elizabeth and other family members in Marion.
