Born in South Carolina, Robert H Shaffer received a medical degree from South Carolina College. He married Elizabeth Wright Shaffer of Charleston. Upon graduating, Dr. Shaffer and wife Elizabeth moved to Madison, Florida. There he had a medical practice and they became parents of eight children. Dr. Shaffer was a mason; a postmaster in the Gum Swamp area for one year, beginning 19 September 1844; and was involved in overseeing voting procedures. After the Battle of Olustee of the Civil War, Dr. Shaffer served at the Smith Mansion, which was used as a hospital. Wills in the archives of Marion, South Carolina of Elizabeth's family, state that Elizabeth and their two youngest daughters returned to Charleston, SC then to Marion, SC to live with the family upon his death in 1869.
