Nellie was the fourteenth of seventeen children of Henry and Cornelia Schutt Van Kppten and their second child to be born in the United States. Her brothers and sisters were born in the Netherlands.

While in grade school she played a Guard in basketball. She met her husband Harry A. Terpstra,, an only child and they married 7 November 1930 and to this union 5 children were born.

He drove a truck while she worked as a waitress.

Nellie passed away in Knoxville, Iowa and she leaves her sister and a brother.

She was preceded in death by other family members.
