Henry Van Kooten, son of Henry and Tennis Van Voorst Van Kooten, was born January 26, 1868 at Beekbergen, Gelderland, The Neterlands, and passed away October 12, 1958 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Van Steenwyk of Knoxville, after a short illness. He had attained the age of 90 years,8 months and 16 days.
On August 18, 1894 he was united in marriage to Cornelia Schut. The family home was first established in the Netherlands. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Van Kooten and family came to America and settled first in Sioux County, Ia; later they came to the Pella Community and have lived near and in this vicinity since. Upon retirement they made their home in Oskaloosa, where Mrs. Van Kooten passed away in 1953.
Born to this union were seventeen children, namely; (Tillie) Mrs. Dick Van Klavern of San Antonio, Texas; (Hattie) Mrs. John Van Arkel of Prairie City; Henry Van Kooten Jr., of New Sharon; Cornelius Van Kooten of Sully; Peter Van Kooten of Rose Hill; (Cornrlia) Mrs. Henry Van Steenwyk of Knoxville; Roy Van Kooten of Searsboro; (Henrietta)Mrs. John Nieuwama of Pella;Gerrit Van Kooten of Leighton; (Berdena) Mrs. Jacob Van Kampen of New Sharon; (Cora) Mrs. John Bruxvoort of Oskaloosa; Everett Van Kooten of Ida Grove; (Nellie) Mrs. Harry Terpstra of Pella; Paul Van Kooten of Oskaloosa; (Pauline) Mrs. George Terpstra of Newton; Albert Van Kooten of Oskaloosa.
