Their son Elijah R. Schoonmaker (1839-1909), born in Sullivan County. They sent Elijah to to common school for an education. While he was young he worked as a clerk in a store, and as a traveling salesman. Eventually, he settled in Limestone and formed a partnership with A. E. and G. W. Palen in a merchandile business and worked with them for three years. He then formed the Schoonmaker and Nichols lumber company. He did some lumber business on his own plus, he operated a tannery store. Then from 1875 to 1885 he was in the oil business, sold real estate and sold bark. He became an involved member of Northern Tier Co. Ltd., was the general manager of Bullis, Schoonmaker and McNeil real estate and lumber company, plus, he was involved in Hall, Schoonmaker and Sheldon Hardwoods, and Bell and Co. Merchants. He was into politics and was popular with people. He was Limestone's postmaster for four years, station agent ten years, seven years president of the Board of Education, and Supervisor of Carrollton six consecutive years ending in 1890, and re-elected in 1893. He was a representative of the Second Assembly District of Cattaraugus County in State Legislature, 1882-83. He was a delegate, several times for the Republican State congressional and senatorial conventions and a delegate to the Republican county convention. On 2/21/1867 Elijah, married Elizabeth Palen and she died 8/4/1870. She was the mother of his son Fred P. Schoonmaker (3/11/1870-). He then married Sarah J. Leonard on 11/2/1871 and their children together were: Elizabeth E. Schoonmaker (7/25/1872-1936) Paton, Alice Schoonmaker (12/8/1873) and Faith Schoonmaker (10/12/1881-). His son, Fred P. Schoonmaker, was born at Limestone, N. Y. He attended Alfred University and graduated from Cornell University, A. B., in 1891. He read law a t St. Paul, Minn., was admitted in McKean Co., Pa., in 1894. He had a practice in Bradford, Pa. He has been admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the State and the United States District Circuit and Supreme Courts.

E. R. Schoonmaker
E. R. Schoonmaker passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gains Smith in Bradford, Friday afternoon. After having been in the Bradford hospital over four months an epidemic of scarlet fever broke out in the hospital, which caused his removal.
He leaves a wife, one son and three daughters, besides a host of relatives and friends, He was long a prominent man in the affairs of the county, having been a member of the state assembly, postmaster, supervisor, etc. and will be missed by all. His funeral at their family residence was held on Monday, the Presbyterian minister from Bradford officiating. Burial in Limestone cemetery.
