Researched by Jaycie Smith:
Born: February 12, 1854, Jasper County, Mississippi. Died: May 6, 1913. Father: James Massey. Mother: Susanna Shoemaker. Married: Kittie Allen Dorman White, November 3, 1895, Henderson County, Texas. Vernal and Kittie Massey were the parents of Paul, John, and Nellie Irene Massey. (Pictured are Vernal Massey's children, from left to right: John Massey, Bill White step-son, Paul Massey, and seated Nellie Massey.)

Sovereign V. Massey was born in Jasper county Mississippi February 12, 1854; came to Texas in 1866, settling in Limestone county; came to Henderson county in 1880, locating at Leagueville. For several years he engaged in mercantile business at Leagueville until about two years ago his failing health caused him to sell out and return to the farm.

To know Vern Massey was to love him. He was of a kind, quiet disposition, absolutely reliable in all his business transactions with his fellow man, always ready and willing to give to the support of the worthy who were in need, liberal to support all worthy public institutions. An upright Christian gentleman, a consistent member of the Baptist church and a zealous woodman.

Be it resolved by Leagueville Camp W.O.W. number 1271 in regular meeting that on May 6, 1913, in the death of Sovereign Massey this camp lost one of it's most faithful members, his children one of the most kind and indulgent of fathers, the church a true and consistent member and the community a true and loyal citizen.

But to his family and many friends we would say, ever look up and be encouraged for if the Christian graces and honorable character are worth anything, Sovereign V. Massey has been called from labor and suffering to rest in a brighter home above to await the coming of friends and loved ones.

Resolved that a copy of this be sent to the Athens Review and to his family.
