John Mentzer, an old and well-known resident of New Holland, died at his home on Brimmer Ave on Sunday night (7 Dec 1902) about 11pm after a lingering illness from complication of diseases, in the 71st year of his age. Deceased was a painter and paper hanger by occupation and worked at his trade until about a year ago when he was obliged to quit due to his failing health. He was a decendant of one of the oldest familes of this community and was well esteemed by all who knew him. He was a member of the Reformed Church.

He had been twice married, but both his wives are dead. Nine children survive him: Matilda, wife of Adam Krick, residing near Lancaster; Emma, wife of Charles Lewis, of Philadelphia; Miss Lizzie, of New Holland, by the first wife; and Ella, wife of George R. Davis, of New Holland; Salinda, wife of Harry Hemphill, of Columbia; Horace of Honeybrook; Wood W., John E and Charles, of New Holland, by the second wife.

The funeral of the deceased was held on Thursday afternoon (4 Dec 1902) and the interment was made in St. Stephen Cemetary of New Holland.
