DEATH OF GILBERT E. WOOLWORTH
Lowvillle, March 17--(Special.)--Gilbert e. Woolworth, who died suddenly at the Phelps hotel in Henderson, Saturday, was well known in Lewis county, where he was born and passed a greater part of his life. His grandfather, Phineas Woolworth, was one of the first settlers of the town of Pinckeny, this county. He came from Suffield, Mass., in 1802, and bought a large tract of land south of the present village of Copenhagen. The deceased was a son of Thaddeus Woolworth, and was born in Pinckney, March 18, 1821. Of a family of eight children, one sur-

vives, William Woolworth of Adams, who is 80 years old. Gilbert E. Woolworth was educated at the ? schools of his native town and at Lowville academy. When a young man he taught school several terms. During his residence at Pinckney he held several town offices, and served as sheriff of Lewis county from 1856 to 1859. At the close of his term ? sheriff he removed from Martinsburg, at which place the county seat was then located, to Deer River, where he engaged i nthe milling business. In 1863 he removed to Watertown, wher he resided up to thetime of his death. He retained his interest in the milling business, however, until 1878. His first wife, a daughter of David Smith of Champion, died in 1854. Four years later he married Mrs. mary White, daughter of Israel White of Taberg, who survives him: also Smith T. Woolworth, cashier of the Jefferson county bank, a son by his first marriage and from the later union, Leland G. Woolworth and Miss Elizabeth E. Woolworth. Politically, Mr. Woolworth was always a democrat. A number of relatives reside in this county.
