The funeral of Leon Downing, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Downing, who died Thursday night after a brief illness, was held at the family residence in East Galena yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S. S. Hageman (sic) of the East Sixth Street Baptist church. Burial was in the Galena cemetery.

GALENA, Kan. — Mrs. Mary Caroline Downing, 83 years old, lifelong resident of Galena, died at a Galena nursing home at midnight Tuesday night, following a lengthy illness. She had been bed-fast four weeks. Mrs. Downing's home was at 817 Euclid avenue. She had been a patient in the nursing home the last year and a half.

A daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. William Burwick, Mrs. Downing was born in a dugout in Wabaunsee county, Kansas, July 18, 1877, and came to Galena area with her parents at the age of three years in a covered-wagon. She was the last member of a pioneer family and also the last of the Downing family into which she married. She was married to Virgil Downing May 9, 1897. He died here in 1948. She was a member of the Sixth Street Baptist church since 1911 and was active in church work for many years.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Louisa Atkinson of Galena, Mrs. Frances Dunbar of Columbus and Mrs. Jeanette Holland of Topeka, and a son, Clay Downing of Providence, R. I.

Funeral plans will be announced by Kitch mortuary.

Pallbearers will be John Simon, F. W. Speck, Homer Peek, Kenneth Jones, Marion Karr and Arthur Horn.

The body will remain at Kitch mortuary chapel until 1 o'clock this afternoon, when it will be taken to the church.

RESIDENT 63 YEARS, DIES

Galena, Kan., Jan. 27.—Virgil Stewart Downing, 80 years old, Galena resident 63 years, died at 12:45 o'clock this afternoon at his home, 811 (sic) [817] Euclid avenue, following a long illness.

Downing was born in Lawrence county, Missouri, in 1867 and came to Galena when he was 17 years old. He was married to Mary C. Burwick in 1897 and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary May 9 last year. He was employed for many years as janitor at the Central school building. He was a member of the Sixth Street Baptist church, where he had served as a deacon 25 years.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Downing of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Louisa Atkinson of Galena, Mrs. O. Dunbar and Mrs. A. Holland, both of Columbus, all of whom were at his bedside; one son, Clay Downing of New York; one sister, Mrs. Mollie Laizure of Columbus, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Poteet funeral home.
