"In November 1915, two Mexican laborers with stolen weapons raided local ranchers in the Mono Basin. Local citizens informed Sheriff Jim Dolan, who then went looking for the men. After locating them, he approached them without drawing his weapon, believing that he could take them into custody without incident. Dolan was shot and killed. Later a posse exchanged gunfire with the two men and killed them."∼Mono County Sheriff James P. Dolan was shot and killed near Mono Lake while chasing several drunk men in Mono Basin. The suspects were all arrested by a posse.
Sheriff Dolan is honored at the California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel E-13, Line 27.
