Geologist and author. In 1861 he published his Geological Map of the World. Noteworthy published papers include Cretaceous formations of the Jura, Dyas (Permian) of Nebraska and Taconic Rocks of Vermont and Canada. Other works include Lettres sur les roches du Jura et leur distribution géographique dans les deux hémisphères and Geology of North America.
