Patriarch of the Eighth Oldest of Ten Early Crago/Craigo Families in America

Eli Craigo married Experience Jones (1809-c1840), daughter of Jacob & Mary Jane Yeaton Jones, all early pioneers of Edgar County, Illinois. From family Bibles and stories handed down by family members, we learn that Eli went out one evening and when he didn't return, his wife went to look for him, leaving her five young children behind.

Neither were ever heard from again. The children were raised by relatives and friends. We know this event had to happen between 1839-1840, since their youngest child was born in 1839 and they do not appear in the 1840 census. It was supposed that they were captured and killed by Indians, but this was never proven. The childrens' family and friends mostly dropped the "O" from Craigo and they become the Craig children.

Not shown below are Samuel J. Craig (1831-1875 ?) and Sarah Jane Craigo (1837-1853).

It is believed that Eli's mother was Elizabeth Hood Craigo, but we also know that Eli was born before Elizabeth married Robert Craigo. His natural father is not known for sure at this time. DNA studies are consistent with Eli's father being a non-Craigo -- and certainly being not Robert Craigo. Eli's DNA profile is now known. Hood may be the surname of Elizabeth's first husband. We believe Eli adopted the surname Craigo after his mother married Robert Craigo.

We know of no stone memorial being placed for Eli and his wife anywhere. One may exist, but we are unaware of it. This online record may be their only memorial.

Since some of his children are buried here, I have placed this memorial in the same cemetery. Clearly his remains are not here, but family may wish to place a memorial stone here at some point.
