Martin was born in Bibb Co. AL on November 28, 1849 and died in Cameron, TX on June 2, 1936. He was the son of William Henderson Fikes and Catherine Blasengame,and was married to Minnie Lee Hughes, Inez Hatch and Francis Sprayberry.
He came with his parents from Jasper Co., MS. According to family tradition, the family crossed the Red River into TX on the 29th Mar 1869. They used horses, mules and ox teams, as traveling was difficult and slow. Much time was lost due to high water in creeks and rivers.
The family stopped a intervals through AR, sometimes working for a short time. They settled in Milam Co. near Cameron, TX. it was not until 1883 that land was purchased in the northwestern part of Milam Co. near Yarrellton TX. This community was settled by many families who formerly lived in AL. Yarrellton had several stores, a school and a blacksmith shop, but the nearest church was some distance away. Martin Luther farmed, raising cotton and grain and hay for livestock.

Martin married 3 times, Frances Jane Sprayberry, Mary Elliot & Minnie Hughes.
