[THE COLUMBUS LEDGER (Georgia) - Jan 14, 1919]

S. B. Baldwin Passes Away

Ledger's Traveling Representative for Near 20 Years Victim of "Flu"

FUNERAL FROM HOUSE; INTERMENT IN TALBOT

Prominent in Political and Church Affairs and Member of Best Known Families in the State

Sam B. Baldwin is dead and a good man has gone to his reward. News of the passing of this well known citizen, who for near twenty years has been traveling representative of The Ledger, will be noted with genuine sorrow and extreme regret by his hundreds of friends who were numerous throughout the Columbus district where he had traveled and become popular in all classes. Mr. Baldwin, a victim of pneumonia and the "flu", died this morning just after 2 o'clock at his late home on Rose Hill, following a brief illness. His general health however, had been poor for some months. He was 74 years of age and was a member of one of the oldest and best known families in this section, his native home being in Talbot county, where he owned considerable farming interests. For years the deceased was postmaster at Talbotton.

Few men were more active and prominent in local and state politics than Uncle Sam Baldwin, as the deceased was familiarly known. At the time of his death he was a member of the Fourth congressional district democratic committee for Muscogee county. For years and years he has held similar important posts and was always "on the inside" when it came to politics. He was a democrat of the old school and one of the staunchest admirers and supporters of the Wilson administration. Under Congressman Adamson and Senator Hoke Smith Mr. Baldwin held important positions during summer vacation periods while in the employ of The Ledger, at Washington during which time he came in contact with the president frequently, and he was a great admirer of the executive. He was always active in local and state politics, but has held no political office, or even asked for one.

Mr. Baldwin was a prominent member of the Baptist church, his membership having been at the Rose Hill church for years, or since removal from Talbot county to Columbus, and few men were more active and faithful in religious matters. He was known as a friend to the poor and his charitable disposition was known far and wide. During his long connection with The Ledger his opportunities to do good among the poorer people of the rural sections were numerous and he took advantage of them like a real man, his kind words and practical advice having been sought far and wide and his deeds having counted for much.

The deceased is survived by his wife and three daughters and four sons as follows: Mrs. H. J. William[s], of Ellaville; Mrs. Harvey Perry, of Shady Dale; Mrs. Rudolph [Rodolph] Woods, of Dawson; F. B. Baldwin, of Oglethorpe; E. S. and S. B. Baldwin Jr., of Atlanta, and Master Hoke Smith Baldwin, of Columbus, the latter being his only child by his second wife. Four brothers also survive him, as follows; S. A. Baldwin, of Howard; W. A. Baldwin, of Talbotton, and D. N. and J. C. Baldwin, of Atlanta. One sister, Mrs. J. J. Bull, of Oglethorpe, also survives him.

The funeral services will take place from the home on Rose Hill at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. Rev. Dr. Henderson, his pastor, officiating, and the remains will be taken on the 1:10 Central to Talbotton, thence to Baldwinville, near that city, the old family section, where the interment is to be made.

The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers to the train: John Scarbrough, R. W. Page, J. P. Turner, Robert Carter of Ellerslie, Carey Willis of Midland and S. M. Davis.Georgia Death Certificate #61, dated Jan 1921 for Baldwin, Samuel Beeker / Age at Death 74 years / City of Death Columbus / County of Death Muscogee / Date of Death 1919 / Year of Death 1919 / Father's Name S.B.
