Pat was born in Kankakee on Jan. 29, 1951, to Al and Wilma Jo (Ohmes) Bilyard. She went to Our Lady Academy for grade school and graduated from Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School. Pat attended Illinois Wesleyan University and graduated with her nursing degree from Olivet Nazarene College. Pat went on to receive her master's degree in nursing from Texas Women's University.
In 1980, she married the love of her life, Dale Barnes. For the past 20 years, they have lived in Racine. Early in her nursing career, Pat worked at Riverside Medical Center. While in Racine, she served as a part-time nurse at Wheaton Franciscan-St. Mary's Medical Center. But Pat's passion was for teaching, and she shared her talents as a nursing instructor at Gateway Technical College-Kenosha, Wis., for the past 19 years.
Pat enjoyed reading, spring flowers, summer breezes, fall leaves, winter snow and being with friends -- especially her card club. Above all, she loved her family and treasured all the times spent together.
Surviving are her husband of almost 29 years, Dale Barnes of Racine; their son, Matthew D. Barnes of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Sharon (Deacon Patrick) Skelly; and brother, Michael (Nancy) Bilyard, both of Bourbonnais; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends too numerous to mention by name.
A very special thanks to Pat's family members and friends for the many acts of kindness and support extended during Pat's journey with cancer. May God bless all of you!
In accordance with Pat's wishes, cremation rites took place. A memorial Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 175 S. Main St. in Manteno, with the Rev. Al Heidecke and Deacon Patrick Skelly. Inurnment will follow in Bloom Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, 295 Main St. NW in Bourbonnais. In memory of Pat, memorials should be made out to the family's wishes.
