Before the Civil War, he owned 1600 acre farm, and lost it all in the wa r. After the war, he became a sharecropper farmer.

From William [Bill] Kilcrease, July 3 2006:
Robert James. I recently was able to finally locate his CSA regiment a nd he is listed on the muster roll. He enlisted on 7/6/1863 at Coffee cou nty, AL and served until 6/2/1865 when he took the oath of allegiance to t he USA. He served in the 57th Alabama, company D and company K. The 57 th AL was organized in 3/1863 at Troy,AL and it's flag was presented to t he regiment on behalf of Judge John Hubbard. The flag survived the remind er of the war and is housed in the AL Department of Archives. The major b attle engaged was Peach Tree creek in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign and Bent onville The regimental history states the 57th was "cut to pieces" and w as later merged into the 27th AL which was surrendered at Greensboro, NC u nder Col A.A. Hughes.

My GGF Robert James was wounded during one of the battles (exact unknown ). His right index finger was shot off and in an old picture I have of h im it shows him covering his right hand with the left. The pictu re I am sending is of him and his family before the war(circa 1852/54... my GF is the young boy on his left knee...he was born in 1850)...note t he really neat black hat and the richness of the family dress....(The oth er male is unknown...possible his wife , Arta Mays, brother?) he was pros perous during that time of his life..he owned and planted approximately 15 00 acres around southern Coffee county and Samson, AL. My family histo ry says he owned over 30 slaves and left the farm in his wife's care wh en he enlisted. I have another later picture is of him after the war ( can 't find it at the moment) ...we think around 1868-1870. He was now sharec ropping with his son Robert Jr and his nephew Robert James(Rob). He is bur ied at Samson, Al...and the picture is of his grave stone...note the Mas on emblem.

From email on 2/6/98 from Rita Butler Slicer:
The most tragic event to befall David's (David Cauley) family in the 187 0s was the untimely death of his 19-year old son, Lloyd. In 1874,
Lloyd had gone with his uncle, Coleman Butler, to Texas. Returni ng to AL they were killed in while camping next to train tracks out of New
Orleans. Scott has copies of Letters David wrote to nuns in Hospital in N ew Orleans.
This also explains why Coleman's wife married his sister Anne's widowed hu sband, C.I. Maloy.
From Suzy Ward:
Coleman left Nancy, saying that he could not put up with her temper any lo nger but was known to have one as worse as she. The story is that he a nd his nephew who ran off with him was found down in Louisiana, layi ng by a railroad track, scalded to death.
