A retired senior detective inspector in the Detroit Police Department, James J. Maher, 64, died Monday in Sinai Hospital. During his 25 years as a policeman, he won 13 precinct citations. He also was awarded the commissioner's citation for his work in the Victor Reuther shooting case. Born in Saginaw, he attended University of Detroit High School and later worked at the Ford Motor Co. He also attended Highland Park Junior College and sold real estate. He joined the Detroit Police force in 1928 and five years later became a detective. He was named an inspector and head of the holdup squad in 1947. He retired in 1953 and returned to selling real estate.
