Anchorage resident Irene "Grammie" Barber, 78, died Feb. 20, 2009, at home of natural causes while surrounded by loved ones. A celebration of life was held at Witzleben Legacy Funeral Home, 1707 S. Bragaw St. Graveside services were at at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Irene was born March 4, 1930, in Shelby, Miss., to Able and Clara Randel. After graduation from high school, she became a certified nurse's assistant and worked at Missouri Baptist Hospital for two years. She loved caring for people so much she went back to school and became a licensed nurse practitioner. After graduation, she soon moved to Junction City, Kan., and worked at Fort Riley Hospital, where she met her future husband, Alonzo Barber. They where married and traveled throughout the Lower 48. In the mid 1960s, Irene's husband's duty station was Anchorage, where she worked at Alaska Native Medical Center. In 1976, she received a bachelor's degree in justice from the University of Alaska Anchorage. During the Clinton administration, Irene volunteered for the Alaska Public Research Group and the Peace Corps, during which time she received numerous awards and certificates for her hard work and dedication.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Donna Estell of Seattle; grandchildren, Andrew Estell of Anchorage, Lorraine and Bobby Carmichael of Anchorage, Michelle Estell of Seattle, Denise Estell of Anchorage, Donna Darden, Diana Barber and Dionne Kelly, all of Seattle; 23 great-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Hemphill; and two nieces of Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her father, Able Randel; mother, Clara Smith; brother, Edger Williams; and daughter, Diana Barber. "She will be greatly missed by all who knew or came in contact with her," her family wrote. "The family would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences."
