She was the sister of Edward J. Berwind and at the death of Berwind wife in 1922, she became the hostess at the Elms. She became the mistress of the Newport mansion when her brother died in 1936, and continued to live there until her death 1961. The Newport Preservation Society purchased the mansion from her heirs.
