"CHARLES M. BERWIND DEAD
Charles M. Berwind, president of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, died yesterday at his residence, No. 2010 Spruce street, from kidney trouble. Mr. Berwind had not been in good health for some time. Mr. Berwind was born in this city in 1846, and was a graduate in the class of '61 of the Central High School. He entered the office of R. H. Powel, coal merchant, on Walnut street, and subsequently became one of the leading as well as wealthiest merchants in the coal trade. He was president of the Pennsylvania and Northwestern Railroad Company, a director of the Sunbury and Lewistown Railway Company, a director of the Girard Life Insurance, Annuity and Trust Company, the Girard National Bank, the Alexandria Coal Company, the Witmer Land and Coal Company, the Irvona Lumber Company and other corporations. He leaves a wife and four daughters."
