LUCAS DOUGLAS DIES
As has been feared for weeks, the illness of Lucas DOUGLAS has ended in death. At 7:10 Thursday evening, February 13, 1896, the life of one of Carroll County's oldest settlers came to a close, and years of usefulness were finished, at his home near town there is now mourning for a father and husband, whose familiar face has for years been frequently seen in our city. Nothing but regrets can follow the demise of such as he. He was a man of good traits won the friendship of all during the many years he has spent in our midst; whose faults were few, and in whom confidence could always be imposed. From early life he has been a figure in all that tended to advance civilization, promote the well being of the community. His interests were not confined him alone, with the highest regard for that which honorable and upright. He was esteemed above the average for his worthy acts and agreeable companionship. He possessed that degree of friendliness for those of his acquaintance that formed ties everlasting.
Mr. DOUGLAS was born in the state of New York in the year of 1825. He was the youngest of three children. His boyhood days were spent in the vicinity of Orono, in the township of Clark, Ontario, Upper Canada. His family came to Carroll Co. Illinois in 1842. They entered and settled on a piece of land near Hickory Grove, This county, now know as the John Lambert farm. A few years later the deceased entered and obtained from the government the land where the present family home marks his labor of years, and where he has since resided until his death.
Mr. DOUGLAS was married to Mary Catherine WOLFEY, November 1853, which union was blessed with seven children, namely, Adelia, Emma, George, Mina, Ida, Riley and Frank. Emma preceded her father into the great beyond some seven years ago. The remainder of the children, with a devoted mother and companion sorrow today for a kind husband, a loving and sympathizing parent.
The deceased is the last one of the old settlers that came to this vicinity prior to 1855. One by one they have all gone to their long home. The funeral will be held at the house today at the 1 o'clock to conducted by rev. Foraker of Lanark. Interment will be in the Savanna Cemetery.

DEATH OF LUCAS DOUGLAS
Lucas DOUGLAS was born in Vermont, August 22, 1825. He resided with his family in New York and Canada until 18 years ago, when the family mover to Carroll County, Illinois and entered land near Hickory Grove, now known as the John Lambert farm. A few years later he entered and obtained government land in Woodland where his family now reside. Later in 1854 he was united in marriage to Mary C. WOLFEY. The union was blessed with eight children, four boys and four girls. His wife and six children survive him. One died in infancy and Emma, wife infancy George Eaton, passed to the Silent Shores seven years ago.
September 24, 1895 he was taken sick with a tumor on the brain. All that all kind friends could do would not save his life. On February 13, 1896 he quietly passed away.
The deceased was one of the oldest settlers who came to county prior to 1854.
The wife and children have the sympathy of many friends and neighbors in their sadness and affliction, wherein they loose a kind husband and indulgent father.
