John O'Donovan (Buddy) Sanchez Sr., 73, longtime advertising account executive with The Pensacola News-Journal, and cousin of presidential candidate Reubin Askew, died Monday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Sanchez hired on at the News-Journal on Sept. 25, 1929. and worked there until his retirement on Aug. 8, 1975.

"His life was his work at the News-Journal," said Jan Sanchez, his son. "That's where he spent most of his time."

"Buddy was a very dedicated employee," said Earl Bowman, director of sports promotion, formerly Mr. Sanchez' boss as retail advertising manager. "He was always at work early and worked late. His accounts (customers) really liked him an awful lot .... Anytime they needed help, he was willing to pitch in and give them the help they needed."

But there was more about Mr. Sanchez than his dedication to work that made him well respected in the business community and among his friends.

"He enjoyed people, meeting them, being around them," said Brenda Sanchez, his daughter-in-law. "Through his work at The News-Journal, he was able to contact different people and got to know them and enjoy them.

"He was concerned about people. He was always inquiring about their well-being, and was interested in their families. He never complained. He always had a smile for everybody; I think he thought most people were basically good and enjoyed life as he did."

Mr. Sanchez was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.

A cousin to former Florida Gov. Reubin Askew, Mr. Sanchez campaigned for Askew when he sought his first term for the governor.

Mr. Sanchez is survived by three sisters, Marjorie Wilson, Charlotte Hughes and Alice Drainville, all of Pensacola; five sons, John Sanchez Jr. of Shreveport, La., Ernest Sanchez of St. Petersburg, Lars Sanchez of Atlanta, Jan Sanchez of Pensacola and Philip Sanchez of Houston; three daughters, Dale Miller and Sandra Wilkinson, both of Denver, and Belle Welk of Kansas City, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Friends of St. Michaels Restoration Fund.

Funeral services will be held at a time to be announced. McNeil-Keyes Funeral Home in Pensacola is in charge of arrangements.
