Nicholas was born in Missouri, the son of Mathias and Caroline (Mueller/Miller) Erschen. He married Mary Ellen Nolan in Odell, IL on September 27, 1899. The 1920 Census for Union Township, IL on January 6, 1920, enumerated shortly before his death, Nicholas was shown as farming rental property in the township. He was only 45 years of age at his death. In addition to his wife, he was survived by 3 sons and one daughter.
