3 YEAR OLD MARYTOWN BOY IS BURNED TO DEATH
Sylvester Bertram, 3 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregor Bertram, who reside three miles south of Marytown, Fond du Lac county, died at St. Agnes hospital in Fond du Lac, Tuesday of burns received when the family residence was partially destroyed by fire on Monday.

The parents of the child are suffering from burns on their hands and faces.

The fire started from an explosion, which occurred while Mr. Bertram was filling a lantern with kerosene early Monday morning. He was the first to arise, and other members of the family were still abed when the fire started.

Kerosene covered the floor of the kitchen and the flames enveloped the room immediately. Mr. Bertram in his excitement ran out of the house first, but realizing the futility of attempting to extinguish the blaze alone, he rushed back through the burning building to arouse the other members of the family and to aid in their rescue.

Mrs. Bertram was awakened by the blast and was in the room in which her children were sleeping when Mr. Bertram retuned to the house. He took his son, Francis and daughter, Maria Jane, to safety, and Mrs. Bertram carried Sylvester through the flames.

The injured child was taken to the Fond du Lac hospital, where everything was done to save him, but his burns were so extensive that he failed to recover, dying at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. the other two children suffered only minor burns.

The kitchen, an addition to the main dwelling, was destroyed by the fire. Neighboring friends, going to the assistance of the Bertram family succeeded in saving the remainder of the building and its contents.
