In 1902, her parents sent her to Randolph Macon Women's College to study music. Actually they were hoping to break up the budding romance between her and her future husband. She loved the music, but returned after one year and got married anyway. Shortly after they were married they moved into the yellow stucco home on King Street that sits almost on top of the old toll house.
When she was widowed at age 47, she did a little bit of everything to get by. One of her main jobs was growing and creating funeral arrangements for this cemetery. She then attended Lewis Hotel School. Eventually she moved to Arlington County, Virginia and went to work for Woodward & Lothrop in the tailoring department. Her sewing was always exquisite. I never minded wearing 'home-made' when she was the seamstress.
She spent her final seventeen years living with her daughter, Alice Rebecca (Polly) Robinson and her family.
