Billings was a bookseller in Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and North Alabama. In 1846, in Columbia, Tennessee., he was arrested and accused of breaking the state's law against spreading abolitionist literature. A jury found him not guilty of the charge. Billings remained in the South during the Civil War and died in 1864.
