Hotel Woman. Alaska Pioneer.

She was born in Kalajoki, Finland, about 80 miles south of Piehinge. She immigrated to America about 1886, to be with her brother, Fred, in Astoria, Oregon.

Marie married Henry H. Hendrickson on 29 Nov 1888, and sometime after their marriage, the extended families of Hendricksons, Koskelas, and Hannilas, went to Rocklin, California, near Sacramento, where the men worked in marble and granite quarries. Marie and Henry's son Arnot was born in Rocklin 28 Oct 1893.

Marie's husband, Henry went to Juneau, Alaska in 1894 and she and their son, Arnot joined him there in 1895. Not long afterward, they built the Rocklin House, a boarding house for miners on Franklin Street between First and Second Streets, where the Baranof Hotel now stands. The rest of the children were born in Juneau at that location. The children were Waino Edward born 18 June 1896, Helen Marie born 25 June 1900, and Hilda Edith born 5 August 1904.

While Henry and his brothers worked in the mines, Marie ran the boarding house and cared for the family. They provided room and board for 20 miners. All the bedrooms were upstairs, with the living, dining, kitchen, and family bedrooms downstairs. Marie's brother, Fred Hannila, came to Juneau about this same time, and by 1888, all the Koskey [named changed] brothers were in Juneau.
Eventually, the family sold the boarding house and homesteaded on Douglas Island. Marie's health began declining and they decided to buy land on Sunny Point. Marie had a stroke soon after the family moved to Sunny Point. She was cared for by Hilda, then by her son Waino and his wife. She died at St. Ann's Hospital.
