Mattie Mae Adcock Stephenson arrived in Willcox, May 10, 1912, just three days short of being one year old. She was born May 13, 1911 in Big Spring, Texas, delivered by Luna Elliott, the midwife. Mattie was the 10th of 12 children born to Francis M. and Julia A. Hardcastle Adcock. The family arrived by train, and the trip had been long and slow all the way from Texas. Grandma Adcock rode in a passenger car with the small children and Grandpa Adcock and the older boys rode back with the horses, wagons, tools and all the family's belongings.

When Mattie was carried from the passenger car and placed on the ground, she was so excited and walked as best and as fast as she was capable. She continued that pace until Dec. 1, 2003. On that day, she left her 92-1/2 year old earthly body.

Her 10 brothers, Bill, Sam, George, John Henry, Raymond, Frank, Luther, Eddie, Jeff, and Lee; and her sister Grace preceded her in death, along with her parents.

Mattie leaves behind two living children, Stark Edward (Pauline) of Ft. Thomas, and Treva Ann Bradley of Elfrida. One infant son died at birth in 1931 at Duncan, and another son, Dannie M., died Nov. 1, 1942 in Willcox. Her husband of 63 years, Stark W. (Buster) passed away Jan. 3, 1994. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 5, at Westlawn Chapel"
