The Passing Away of Mrs. Mary E. Phifer.
Mary E. Farris was born in Highland Co. Ohio April 28,1846. When a young girl she came with her parents to Iowa. On Aug. 18, 1865 [I have 1894 in my records] she was united in marriage to John Phifer and to this union five children were born, four girls and one boy, all of whom were at her bedside as she passed "through the valley of the shadow of death" Jan 19,1915 aged 69 years, 8 months and 21 days.

The children are Mrs. A. J. Reed, Monroe, Iowa; Mrs. G. W. Buttrey, Cordova, Iowa; Mrs. W. G. Wilson, Altoona, Iowa; Mrs. S. A. Johnson, Monroe, Iowa; Mr. john Phifer, Dunreath, Iowa. Besides she leaves fifteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two sisters and one brother: Mrs. B. F. Pointer, Mrs. J. S. Barr, and Mr. J. F. Farris, all of whom now reside in Nebraska.

Death called her husband from her Jan 20,1906. Shortly after that she moved to Monroe where she spent the remainder of her life. The last few months of her life were spent with her daughter Mrs. Johnson who lovingly and tenderly cared for her through her last sickness.

When fifteen years of age she united with the Christian Church of which she remained a member until 1894 when (in the absence of a Christian Church) she united with the Evangelical Church of which she was a member until she moved to Monroe when again she found it necessary to change her membership that she might have a home in some church. It was at that time that she united with the Baptist Church of which she was a member until the date of her death. She was a loyal wife, a kind loving mother and a good neighbor.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, Rev. Leake of Newton delivered an impressive sermon and the beautiful thoughts he gave out as he pictured the 23rd Psalm will long be remembered by his hearers. Mr.and Mrs. Livingston, Mrs. Will Mullins and Charley Comey sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "Rock of Ages" and Abide with Me.' The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the cemetery at Dunreath.

The family extend their heartfelt thanks to their neighbors and friends for the kindness and sympathy that was shown them in their sorrow.
