Hortense had lived with her parents and, later, with her brother John J. Kinney until she married in her forties. She did excellent needlework and crochet, winning many blue ribbons at county fairs. Needlework of this era was very fine and complex. The back side of a piece of work was almost as good as the front, stitches were small, even, and very smooth.
