John was the oldest son of a family of eight born to William Henry Holmes and Mary Emily Bingham. He was born in Wilson, Weber Co., Utah, on April 18, 1901. He has 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

He started school when he was seven years old. He graduated from the eighth grade in 1916. He walked a mile and a half to and from school, rain or shine, snow or blizzard, for a number of years. They later had a school wagon; his grandfather, Willard Bingham, drove it. With mud to the axles, we could walk faster than the horses.

He quit school to help his father on the farm but would have liked very much to have gone on and become a doctor of medicine. His folks figured an eighth-grade education was sufficient. (So far three of my seven children have graduated from college and he hoped the rest could do the same.)

On June 13, 1923, Sarah and John were married in the Salt Lake Temple by George F. Richards. They have seven children: four girls and three sons.

He has always enjoyed church work and in 1915 was set apart as secretary of the Young Men's Mutual Association. Since then he has served as President of the Deacons Quorum. When he was a Priest he baptized nine children into the Church. He had served as a ward teacher for many years. In 1926 he was set apart as Superintendent of the YMMIA in which capacity he served until he had set apart as Ward Clerk to Bishop James H. Pratt in 1929. He was released in 1942 having served under three bishops. He taught Sunday School for many years and acted as one of the Seven Presidents of our Seventies Quorum. He was a secretary of the fifty-fourth quorum of Seventy.

He has been active on the Old Folks Committee since he was married in 1923 and was served until in 1954.

He passed away on February 13, 1977, in Ogden, Weber, Utah, and was buried in Ogden City Cemetery in Ogden, Weber, Utah.
