"John Pope of Henry County, Georgia was born about 1816 and died September 1864 while serving in the Confederate Army at Andersonville of Typhoid fever. He was buried in the Confederate cemetery at Americus, Georgia."

Enlisted as a Private June 27, 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Capt. W. L. Hubbard. He was 47 years of age, stood 5' 8" in height, ruddy complexioned with blue eyes and auburn hair. He was a farmer from Heard County, Ga. The October 31st muster roll for this company indicates that Private John Pope died on August 6, 1864. The records at Andersonville Prison indicate that a John Pope died while on duty at the prison and was buried in Americus, GA in Oak Grove Cemetery – grave # 25.
