James Welborn came to Anson County, North Carolina, which later became Rowan County, when he was 25 years of age, this would have been about 1752. He settled on the headwaters of Abbott's Creek, North Carolina, which later became Davidson County, North Carolina. The year he moved to Kentucky is not known but certainly before his death in 1811.

He served during the American Revolution by furnishing sundries and supplies to the militia in North Carolina. (for American Revolutionary War service see reference in the DAR Patriot Index, Volume I, page 727)
