He was the son of Francis and Barbara Ritter Sr. He married Barbara Schneider about 1767. He was one of the men, along with John and Jacob Snyder, who built the only printing press ever constructed in Berks County. On this press, "Der Readinger Adler" [The Reading Adler] was first printed, the first number appearing 25 November 1796. He owned a half interest in this newspaper. He was a farmer as well and a patriot of the Revolutionary War, serving as a private in the 5th Battalion, Company 4.

"On Sunday last, at his residence in Exeter township, Mr. Francis Ritter, father of Mr. John Ritter, editor of Der Readinger Adler. He was born on the 26th August 1741, having attained the advanced age of 83 years, 10 months and 28 days, during all which time with the exception of 17 months previous to his death, he enjoyed uninterrupted good health. He left behind him 7 children and lived to see 68 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren." (Courtesy of Diana Quinones)
