DULUTH, Minn. - The Rev. Joseph Dahlquist, 91, died Sunday (Sept. 13, 2009) at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Pastor Joe was born in Negaunee, Mich., on Oct. 14, 1917, to Cecelia (Isaacson) and Carl Joseph Dahlquist. He graduated from Negaunee High School and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps near Newberry and Manistique, Mich. He graduated from Augustana College (Rock Island, Ill.) in 1941 and from Augustana Seminary in 1945. He married Janice Selander of Galesburg, Ill., in 1945 and was ordained into the Lutheran ministry. During his career he served churches in Stronghurst, Ill., Essex, Iowa, Cokato, Minn., and in Duluth, Minn., at Elim Lutheran from 1961 to 1974, and Gloria Dei Lutheran from 1974 until his retirement in 1982.

He served on boards for Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Bethesda Hospital (Minneapolis), and was chairman of the board on social ministry for the LCA. He served as interim pastor at several Duluth churches and was most recently a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

An avid golfer and bowler, he enjoyed Senior Olympics in both sports and was inducted into the Duluth Bowling Hall of Fame in 1983. Music was his other passion. He sang everywhere, including Duluth Symphony Chorus and Duluth operas from 1962 to 1982. Until just before his death, he was still leading hymn-sings with the residents at Chris Jensen.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Janice; brothers, Robert and Harold; and sister, Ruth Westbrook. He is survived by sons, Rodney (Janine), Duluth, Roger (Barbara), St. Paul Park, and Roland of Phoenix; sister, Betty Miller, Ishpeming, Mich.; and grandchildren, Brandon, Emily (Wade) Laughlin, Brita, Andrew (Amy), Angela (Scott) Peterson and Alec.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the 5 p.m. funeral Monday, Sept. 21, in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery.
