Mary she entered school at a pre-school age, by the time she was fifteen she was teaching in the public schools. After school hours she worked in her father's newspaper office. In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed her as Petersburg's Postmistress, during which time she received a government citation for the excellence of her work. In 1882 she established a real estate and insurance agency in Petersburg.
She was a charter member of the Cradle of Liberty Chapter DAR. She was a missionary in the Hosmer Presbyterian church. She was so beloved in the town of Hosmer, the name was officially changed to Glezen to honor her.
