J.C. Wilcox, Early Pioneer, Called

John C. Wilcox, 80, pioneer rancher and stockman of Moab, died at his home here at 4 o'clock Wednesday morning as the result of a fall which he sustained the evening before. Funeral services will be held at the LDS chapel Friday afternoon.

Several months ago, Mr. Wilcox suffered a broken leg. In spite of his age, he was gradually recovering and had been able to walk with the aid of crutches for the past several weeks. Tuesday evening at about 6 o'clock, he walked out onto the porch of his home. One of his crutches struck a knot hole in the porch floor and he was thrown violently to the ground, suffering a brain concussion. Mr. Wilcox never regained consciousness, death coming about eight hours later.

Mr. Wilcox was born at Pleasant Grove, Utah March 13, 1868, the son of John Henry and Mary Wilcox, early Utah pioneers. On December 30, 1877, he married Miss Violet Westwood at Mt. Pleasant, Utah. After residing in Sanpete County for several years, they moved to Moab 50 years ago, and had made their home here since. Mrs. Wilcox died about 10 years ago.

Mr. Wilcox was the father of 14 children, eight of whom survive. They are 1) Carlos and 2) Henry Wilcox, Green River, 3) Theron Wilcox Gillmore, 4)Mrs. Olive Bailey, Salt Lake City, and 5) Mrs. Mabel Johnson, 6) Mrs. Hazel day, 7) Mrs. Bertha Woodruff, and 8) Mrs. Hilda Allred, Moab. He is survived by 44 grandchildren.

Jack Wilcox, as he was affectionately known, had a host of friends throughout southeastern Utah who are shocked and grieved to learn of his death.
