Painter. He was a talented American illustrator, muralist and lithographer. Oscar Berninghaus created his art in the Southwest style. In 1915, he was one of the founding members of the elite Taos Artists Society. His formal art education consisted of three brief evening terms at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in Missouri. As his creativity and talent progressed, he received many awards for his stylish paintings. One of his best known murals is in the Missouri state capitol building in Jefferson City. Many of his advertising commissions were made into prints, which were then reproduced by the hundreds of thousands. His funeral service was held in his art studio. The event was attended by Native-American Indians, Hispanics as well as Anglos, all gathering together, as he had treated the people of the area with equal respect and grace. He was such a beloved member of his community, local businesses closed during the hours of the memorial service as a sign of respect. An art historian was quoted as having said about Oscar Berninghaus: "He was at once, a romantic and realist, poet and naturalist."
