James Huffman (1788-1841)

James Huffman was born on 23 Sep 1788, and died 02 Aug 1841, in Richland County, Ohio.

He was born in Pennsylvania and his parents were John and Sarah (Leet) Huffman [1].
John and Sarah Leet had seven children and James was the youngest [2].

It is not known when James moved to Ohio. On 30 Jan 1812, at the age of 23, he married 18 year old Agnes Casebeer (daughter of Nathan) in Jefferson County, Ohio. He was a farmer.

Though they remained in Ohio, the couple were mobile in their early married life. The couple’s first two children, Nathan and Maria, were born in Knox County [1,3], their third, Jacob, in Guernsey [3], and their fourth, Nancy, in Hardin [3].

James received land from the government which was located in Richland County, Ohio in 1818 but the family didn’t move there until 1834 [3].

The couple was residing in Coshocton County in 1820, when children Marinda, George, and Rueben were born.

In 1831, their son Christopher Bigelow was born in Crawford County [3]. In 1834, they settled in Richland County where Mary and Amarilla were born [1,3].

Sadly James lost his wife, Agnes, on 12 April 1838, when his youngest daughter was only 1 year old. In 1840, all the children, except Mary, were still living with their father. In a devastating blow to the children, James died on 2 Aug 1841. His 14 year old son Rueben, died only 2 months later. All are buried in the Barnes-Talbot Cemetery in Galion, Crawford, Ohio.

The following are the sources that provide information for which I cannot corroborate.

1 Jonah Porter and his Descendants by Nancy Porter, 1991 cites
the marriage certificate of James and Agnes,
family records of Ida Starks.”

2 The Bowers Book, a genealogy by Meier, Oveda (Oveda Bowers)

3 The Descendants of William Barnes, Birth/Death 1735-1824 compiled by Delna Powell, August 1997, citing source as John Earl Huffman (1892-1985), son of William E Huffman (1848-1930), son of Jacob Huffman (1817-1865), son of James Huffman. William E Huffman wrote down his genealogy about 1916.

NOTE: 1820 and 1830 census show James Huffman and family in Coshocton County, Ohio, so it is very likely that Marinda, George, and Rueben were born in that county.
