John's children, Carl and Mary died the same week of scalret fever in 1898. Daughter Alice died in 1918, leaving 2 year old Margaret Corene Akin, who lived with John until his death in 1932. Margaret then went to live with her paternal grandmother, Mary Louise Rogers, in St. Joseph, Mo.
obit: "John William Griffith was born near Millburg, Kentucky, Augusr 5th. 1853 being at the time of his death, about 79 years old. He was the son of William and Lizzie Griffith. Like others from Kentucky and Virginia, he came to this part of Missouriin an early day. He married Miss Cora Lee Yates, a member of one the old substantial familes of Platte County.
He lived to see three of his children and his good wife called into the Great Beyond to await his coming. He was a man of strength who thought for himself. His frankness was a thing to be admired. In his own way he tried to bring sunshine and happiness to those with whom he came in contact. A firm believer and follower of Christ for many years, he had been a faithful member of the church at Ridgley.
With a daughter, Mrs. Georgia Newman, and a son, William E. Griffith, and two brothers, he leaves a host of friends to mourn his loss. The large company at his funeral was a testamony of his standing and worth in the community."
