Leon's parents came from Alabama to Madisonville, Madison County, Texas about 1868 where they lived for about 25 years. In 1895, they moved to Alvin, Brazoria County, Texas. Leon was the only child born in Brazoria County. The other 14 of his siblings were born in Madisonville.
He married Neva Winston Ward and they had three children: a son, L. D. Roberts, Jr., and two daughters Mary Belle Woolley and Bonnie Louise Tappe. They had seven grandchildren.
His daughter Bonnie recalls that he worked as a telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad.
The last nine years of his life, Leon had lived in Galveston, Texas. He died there at UTMB Hospital on January 9, 1960 from heart problems. He was buried in the W.O.W. Cemetery (now Rosenberg Cemetery) in Rosenberg, Texas. There is no gravestone for Leon - he is buried next to the parents of his wife Neva Winston Roberts.
